Hepworth Band – Hepworth band is at the heart of a small village community close to the town of Holmfirth in the Holme Valley, West Yorkshire and for over 140 years has been an intrinsic part of the area’s culture and rich musical tradition.
As a Championship Section brass band Hepworth competes at the highest level. In fact for a ‘village band’ it competes remarkably successfully, maintaining Championship status for 25 years, having qualified during that time to represent Yorkshire at the finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at the Royal Albert Hall on four occasions and earning an invitation to compete at the prestigious British Open Brass Band Championships at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
As well as the bands’ impressive contesting record, it is equally at home on the concert stage where it has gained a reputation for presenting varied and exciting performances. The band promotes concerts in venues across the local area and performs further a-field in concert series, festivals and as guests of other music organisations.
Katie Spencer – Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.
“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell.
Bar and refreshments available throughout the evening.
